Being Thankful….

This is a great time of the year to take stock of what is going on in your life.  It is easy to dwell on the negative, but rather I would challenge everyone to look at what you’re thankful for.  I am sure that everyone can find something, even if it just that you are still able to take a breath!

Here in Cedar City, we have such natural beauty surrounding us, so I am thankful for that every day. This weekend also marks Veteran’s Day.  It is the 93rd year of observance of this Holiday in which we honor these valiant servants!

I know that I do know have a large enough command of the English Language to fully express how grateful I am for each and everyone who has served our Great Nation in the Military!  Somehow the words “Thank You” while being heartfelt and genuine, it seems inadequate.  The reality is, that is all that I have to say, Thank You!  For at least one grateful American, I sleep at night because I know that you all have our backs, always have and always will!

I am including photos from the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Cedar City as my tribute to each and every one of you!

Tonight: Tip a Cop

Tonight at the Pizza Factory Police Officers will be your waiters.  The reason that we’re writing about this and why they are doing it isn’t to make nice with the community.  It is to earn tips to help fund Christmas for needy children.  That’s right all of the tips paid to the Wait Staff (Police Officers, EMS Staff and Firemen), will go to buy Christmas presents for youngsters that may not otherwise have presents on Christmas Day. Some of the participating restaurants will donate part of their profits to this cause.

Tonight this will take place from 6 to 10 PM, so go and enjoy some great pizza and pasta, tip generously and you have helped a child have a Christmas.  There are other nights and restaurants to participate in this program.  The fun thing about this is that on the day when the children participate with the Police Officers is called Shop with a Cop.

The Police, EMS and Fire Departments pick the children up early on a specified Saturday and takes them to Walmart to buy what the children want.  Walmart will then wrap the presents for the children.  The children are then treated to a breakfast with the officers, EMS and firemen.  When they are going to and from it is a slow moving parade with the lights and sirens blasting.  The children have a great time!

This is a wonderful cause, so go to the Pizza Factory tonight and support it!  If you can’t go tonight, watch for other Tip a Cop nights at other restaurants and go to then.  I imagine that if you just want to donate, you can contact the Police Department during business hours and request to make a donation.

A Quote for Today and All of Your Tomorrows…..

Darcy and I were driving to the office this morning.  A School bus passed as we were waiting for the light to change, on the side of it there was a quote posted.  I am not sure who to attribute the quote to, but it goes like this:  “Excellence is a habit, Pass it on.”

What a great thing to remember!  We live in a World that is telling us that it is okay to do enough to just get by.  What we need to remember and take into our being is that anything short of excellence is not reaching our potential.  I know that as human beings we frequently fall short of our and other people’s expectations.

The truth is this, if we have given our very best effort and we had prepared ourselves to the best of our abilities, we achieved excellence!  Excellence is not achieved by accepting a token effort as our best effort.  Excellence is also not achieved by preparing by studying the “Cliff’s Notes” or taking shortcuts.

Excellence comes from training ourselves with everything that we have to train ourselves.  It comes from being able to look back and honestly being able to say, “I gave it everything that I had to give.”  I agree with this quote, Excellence is a habit, Pass it on!

American Southwest Classic Film Festival…..

Save a spot on your calendar for The American Southwest Classic Film Festival in Cedar City, Utah.  This event will be Thursday October 4th.  This is a festival celebrating Cedar City’s involvement in the film industry.  The aim of this festival is to showcase the movies that were filmed in and around Cedar City.

This will be held at the Heritage Center at 7 PM.  This year we have a special treat, not only are we going to see the Classic Alan Ladd movie, “The Proud Rebel”, which also starred Olivia de Haviland.  David Ladd, Alan’s son and co-star, will attend this event.  He will talk about his memories of filming and staying in Cedar City at the time.

There are a couple of price points, for $10 you can watch the film.  The number of the $25 Premier Passes will be limited.  The premier pass holders will not only view the film but will be able to attend the Gala Celebration afterwards at the Depot Grill and be able to meet David Ladd.  Other attendees will include Doug Wright, of KSL’s “The Movie Show” and James D’Arc, author of the book, “When Hollywood Came to Town.”

This is planned as an annual event, so let’s show our support so that we can have this for many years to come.  This is a great opportunity to see a great film and relive some great times!  For tickets and more information: www.cedarcity.org
