I like sports, I will admit that I am a sports fan, at least of the major sports. My favorite is Baseball and there are some really good races going on for the playoffs. I turn ESPN on and all they seem to talk about is Football. I know that Football is the most popular Sport in the United States, so it makes sense for ESPN to highlight Football. I was reminded of some great thoughts about success that come from the Football Fields.
If you substitute the word Success for Winning, these quote are applicable in everything. They come from one of the legendary Football coaches in the History of the game, Vince Lombardi. He won many Championships with the Green Bay Packers, including the First two Superbowls. He was known as a tough minded coach who demanded committment to the team from his players, and that they execute every play properly. Here are the quotes:
“Winning is not a sometime thing; it is an all-time thing. You don’t have to win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit; unfortunately, so is losing.”
And this one:
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.”
The second quote to me, gives the first quote it’s strength. It isn’t enough to try to do your best or do things right, it is having the commitment to make sure that whatever happens, you’re going to continue on, and you’re going to continue to do the right things the right way. It is when we give in and accept something less than our total effort or less than doing things right that we begin to accept losing.
