For those of us in the US, Canada, Great Britain and France at least today commemorates the 67th Anniversary of an important battle during World War II. 67 years ago today Allied forces launched a major offensive on Nazi held France. This was the beginning of the end of the War in Europe. Thousands of men died in that battle on both sides, My Dad’s brother was fortunate, he wasn’t one of them. He was in the 8th or 9th wave of troops to attempt to land on Omaha Beach.
Many years ago I asked him what D-Day on Omaha Beach was like. He snapped his fingers and said it was like watching 7 waves of men die just that fast. Later he explained that as far as he was concerned, D-Day was far worse than Hell, and that the water from three feet out from the beach looked more like blood than water. To me, he was a hero. To himself, the heroes were those that never made it to, nor off of the beaches that day.
The reality is, that they were all heroes who’s sacrifice should never be minimized nor forgotten!
