Recycling Program in Cedar City….

Last August Cedar City began it’s first Recycling Program.  It was began with bins where residents could put recyclables into.  The bins were placed with about a week left in August, yet nearly 12,000 pounds of recyclable materials were gathered that month.  September saw nearly 34,000 pounds recycled.  Now each month nearly 45,000 pounds are recycled.

The recyclables collected are paper, plastic, glass and metals.  Cardboard is collected in a different site.  The collection sites are:

Home Depot: 1518 South Providence Center Ave. Cedar City

Cedar Middle School: 2215 West Royal Hunte Drive, Cedar City

Smiths Food & Drug: 633 South Main Street, Cedar City

Southern Utah University: 351 West University, Cedar City

Frontier Homestead State Park:  635 North Main Street, Cedar City

Canyon View Middle School: 1865 North Main Street, Cedar City

Cardboard is collected at a PURE Recycling bin at Westview Drive and SR56.

This effort has kept over 200,000 pounds of waste out of our landfill.  The City has parntered with PURE Recycling in St. George to handle the recycling.  We are still a ways out from curbside recycling but if these efforts continue to grow, that may become a reality.
